As I was reading through some articles on the internet this morning I came across an interesting article about how a police chief in Montana was charged with shooting moose illegally. This guy took his fourteen year old adopted son hunting on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, where they shot four moose. Neither the police chief or his son are tribal members of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, but the son was born on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Indian Reservation hear in North Dakota. Since they are not tribal members they would be required to buy a tribal liscense to hunt there which they did not do. Also they shot the moose on July 4th when the season is closed. When he was charged with shooting the moose he actually offered the game wardens a moose burger at the police station. Not only is it disappointing that they shot the moose out of season where they were not supposed to be hunting, but he is a police chief and he also is not being a good role model for his adopted son. I hope that they throw the book at him for shooting those moose, and I hope that he looses his job because he obviously does not have much regard for the law. Because of people doing things like this it makes all hunters look bad because this type of thing makes the news, but the good things that hunters do very seldom make the news. It is very disappointing that this is what makes the news when there are so many more positive things that hunters do, for example the hunters feeding the hungry programs where hunters donate the meat from animals that they harvest and might not eat all of it themselves.

One thing that stood out to me about this article is that it was short and to the point which was good considering the way that the article was written. The first thing that I noticed is that the writer misspelled the name of the town where this guy was the police chief which is Poplar, Montana. In the first sentence of the article the author spelled the name of the town as Polar, Montana. If this article would have been any longer than it was I probably would not have read any more of it after seeing that mistake in the first sentence.

  1. wow.... yeah this guy needs to be hit with the law that he himself should have been upholding. I mean he is or i should say was the police chief, the head of the government body that enforces the law. He is setting a very bad example for his adopted son with what they did. but I do find it funny that when the game wardens came to place him under arrest that he offered them a moose burger.

  2. I will have to agree with josh this guy should get a harsh penalty. And what kind of role model are we showing are kids, it seems like there is so much of this stuff going on I see so much of it. Parents will lose their heads during the deer season and shoot their sons or daughters deer just to show them off to other people, or husbands getting licensees for their wives who don’t even hunt they don’t even go out it’s just another buck tag just in case the first buck they shoot isn’t big enough. It makes me disappointed knowing all the illegal things people due and they really need to get hit hard with large penalties.

  3. This is another sad story about people who think they can get away with everything after getting alot of authority. As you pointed out it is sad that most of the news about hunters is always the bad and never the good. Hunters are one of the sole reasons their are national parks (Teddy Roosevelt) and land preservations acts that keep land and habitat for animals to live in and for people to enjoy seeing the beauty of nature. But, of course you never hear stories about these great things hunters do. All you hear about are morons like this guy ruining quality game and showing young hunters how not hunt. Its sad but true the only thing we can do is go on supporting hunting advicates and shunning the irresponsilbe dolts that ruin it for everyone.

  4. A police chief that was hunting moose illegally? What’s going on, a police chief should know better than to hunt moose illegally. For one, hunting on July 4th is never good. Few hunting seasons are open at that time. Two, he was hunting on reservation land because he thought his adopted son could be considered part of that reservation. Like Josh said, it is people like that man who make hunting harder to defend. All the bad news out there about hunting makes it harder for the ethical hunters to keep hunting as part of our lives.

  5. That is pretty funny about the mispelling of the town where this took place. I mean how do you do that one, especially when posted articles have to have an editor review them and give the go ahead to post or publish the work. Anywho, with the police chief and the adopted son, they should both be thrown in jail. If you don't have any regard for the law, the animals or anyone else who they took the opportunity to harvest a fine animal away from, I tell you what, they should be locked up! I have experienced and witnessed poaching and I don't have a problem calling the proper officials to deal with that sort of a problem. This is just stupid for anyone to do, it makes me pretty pissed off...

  6. Not only was the police chief setting a bad example to his adopted son by shooting moose illegal, but I think he is setting a bad example to everyone. Just because he is the police chief doesn’t mean he can go shoot whatever he wants to when he wants to. I thought it was pretty funny though that he offered people moose burgers at the police station when he was getting charged for shooting the moose.
